Long-term after-effects of Gaming on Players
Long-term after-effects of Gaming
Gaming has always been the spotlight. Many studies have tried to show that playing has long-term and short-term negative consequences for players. Many crimes have been attributed just to the fact that a criminal in his / her free time occasionally played a video game. The fact that there are hundreds of millions of other decent, well-ordered and intelligent players in the world has not been that important to many studies or politiciants.
However, as it turns out, many of these studies have been falsified, and police or politicians like to point out to others, if they don't have to admit that the thing that failed was the whole system that could not catch dangerous people in time and prevent them from committing criminal offenses.
One of the recent studies has tried to show that players of video games or slot machines, have a reduced empathy. The test was that, immediately after an intense play, the player was exposed to a very stressful situation - preventing a fight. This same situation was also experienced by non-players. As a result, players responded more slowly, and the study suggested that playing games reduces empathy. This study was eventually retracted for very gross errors in the evaluation of statistics. The scientists working on the study anticipated a result, and modified all the data in such a way that the result seemed correct. Even if the study was truly true and it was not proven to have been manipulated, it would be necessary to think about what it actually tried to achieve.
Based on this study, another study was developed, which, on the contrary, decided to find out the long-term consequences of playing on players. Both players and non-players were exposed to the same stressful situation, but with the difference that long-time players had a break of several hours between playing and stressful situation. As it turned out, the reaction time of both players and non-players was totally comparable after the game pause.
The explanation of the discrepancy between these two studies is basically very simple (still assuming that the first study was not manipulated). Playing games is an emotionally very demanding activity. Immediately after play, the player is emotionally exhausted and needs a short break. Every emotion is caused by the release of hormones, and if all the hormones are flushed, it is necessary that the body supplements them back, which is not possible immediately.
An example would be an athlete after a peak performance. It is clear that he is tired and also needs time to regenerate. However, this does not mean that sporting has been contributing to the fatigue of the body. Is is just important to relax for a bit before you can perform another great performance.
Playing video games, as well as slot machines, has no long-term consequences. But it is important to play responsibly and mainly for fun. You can really win a lot, but you should never just sit down to win. Even though there are no long-term effect from play, there is still a risk of gambling addiction.
